The word Lisu means 'Phu fairu heng chivit,' which is translated as inquisitive one, or one who searches for knowledge through various experiences and elements of life.

The Lisu tribe originated from Tibet and northern parts of Yunan.

The two main sub-groups are (flower)Hua-Lisu, and (black)He- Lisu. However, the clothing is very similar. They take great pride in their vibrant and colorful costumes.
